History tells us that YHVH brought His people out of Egypt, through the red sea, to mount Sinai, through the wilderness, to the Promise Land. This is the same pattern we follow as believers when we accept Y’shua as our Saviour. We repent and through His grace, become born again. This is parallel to Israel coming out of Egypt (bondage) and left the past life behind, and follows YHVH to the mountain.
I first want to spend some time in Egypt, where we will look at the first enemy, then we will go on to the wilderness, where we will look at the second enemy. These two enemies are spiritual enemies that we face today as believers, and we will get insight looking what happened to Israel, so that we can know our enemies and conquer them.
1. The first enemy – Pharaoh.
The word Egypt means bondage and Pharaoh is the king of bondage. Pharaoh represents Satan, and he is the king of bondage and slavery. He binds people and keeps them captive under his power and control. Where is Satan’s power and how does he control people. We read in Scripture that Satan is the father of lies; he is totally the opposite of YHVH, the Father of Truth (Y’shua).
Being on the path of looking at opposites, lets look at the word Egypt. Egypt in Hebrew is “
mitsrayeem”

and have two “
mem’s”, one on either side of the word. Inside the “
mem’s” we get the word “
tseree”,

meaning; ‘to build’, ‘crack’, ‘leak’ and ‘balsam’. YHVH also has a word starting and ending with two “
mem’s”, it is the word “
mayim”

meaning water. It has a “
yod” between the two “
mem’s”, representing YHVH’s Spirit and anointing. Y’shua is the Living water (truth) and He gave us His Spirit (
yod).
Comparing the two words, “
mayim” and “
mitsrayeem”, both word’s centres represent anointing. Firstly, YHVH’s anointing – the “
yod”, and secondly Satan’s anointing, the “
tseree” or balsam. Balsam is always associated with a dead corpse, and in this case, spiritual death. Y’shua is the Son (“
ben” or builder) of YHVH Who builds us and creates us into His likeness. Satan copied YHVH and he is the builder who builds his people into the city of bondage. We see that YHVH has a City, the New Jerusalem, and Satan has a City, Egypt.
Satan’s anointing and balsam also means ‘crack’ and ‘leaking’ and giving us the true nature of the foundation of his city. This city is build upon a false anointing and Satan attracts people to his city through this false anointing and false water (
mi-tsree-m), which is the false truth or lie.
The first time Egypt is used in Scripture is in Gen 12:10, where Abraham went to Egypt because there was famine in the land. Egypt is like an oasis in the desert for the “fleshly needs” and attracts people who are “fleshly orientated”, to come into the walls of “provision”, in exchange for their freedom. As we have seen before, Satan copies YHVH in everything, but he focuses on the physical, pulling people away from their true needs, in the spiritual. He substitutes our need for spiritual food (the Word – Y’shua), and feeds people’s spiritual hunger with his copied physical food (Lies – Anti-messiah), appearing to be “spiritual”. This deception will bring you into bondage and being ineffective in the kingdom of YHVH where you stay in Egypt’s walls, “happy” and “satisfied”.
The truth is, when you repent from sin, accept Y’shua as your Saviour, you are leaving Egypt. You must get the real truth concerning YHVH’s ways at the mountain (Sinai), so that you will not be deceived again, and return back to Egypt, serving Satan under a “religious” mantel. The mountain is of absolute importance to get the “boundaries” protecting you from returning back to bondage. These boundaries are spelled out in YHVH’s Torah, the part of Scripture most people ignore, and following it, you will find yourself on your way to the promise land. Overcoming Satan and Egypt is by living and following Torah after you have accepted Y’shua as your Saviour, this has defeated Satan and you are free from his bondage.
2. The second enemy - Amalek
Being in the wilderness, brings us to the second enemy. Unfortunately, the way to the promise land is through the wilderness. There is no short cut and everybody must go through it. The wilderness is also known as life, lived by a believer in Y’shua. If you are equipped with the Torah and the “protection” of YHVH, your journey will be easier than the person who chose to live only according to “preferred” and certain boundaries. I call YHVH’s Torah or instructions boundaries because it is the safe place to make desiccations in, where the result will be liberating and where you will experience YHVH’s peace and “Chai Olam” (quality of life - holiness).
Why the wilderness? The wilderness is a place where your flesh is not stimulated, and an environment where you spirit will flourish and grow. YHVH put the Israelites in a place where they are not distracted by the “beauty” of Egypt, and where He can work getting “Egypt” out of their system. Your flesh and spirit cannot grow at the same time; it’s either the one or the other. Feed the flesh, and your spirit will starve, but starving the flesh, will waken your spiritual appetite and hunger for spiritual things. YHVH is so profound in His wisdom and has designed everything in such a perfect way, so that you can live and experience His awesomeness as you live out His instructions. If you rebel against it, this same well-designed life, will prune you back into His arms, where He will bandage your wounds, and give you His instructions again. Everything works out for the good, for those who love Him.
In the wilderness the Israelites encountered an enemy, the Amalekites. Who were the Amalekites? The Amalekites came from Esau bloodline and Amalek was the grandson of Esau. Esau’s son, the father of Amalek, was Eliphaz, meaning; “the god of gold”. Amalek’s mother was Timna, meaning; “restraint” or “holding back of the will”. Doesn’t this sound a bit like bondage? This is the origin of Amalek; god of gold, lover of material things, physical things, and restricting of the will, or binding you ability to make your own choices. These two in relation with each other shows us that the love for physical and material things, gives you free choice regarding this, but binds your free choice regarding the spiritual things. This is a veil over the eyes of these people, restricting them to see spiritual things.
Amalek means “dweller in a valley”. These people dwelled in a valley or ‘low place’ (physically orientated) and made war with Israel, people dwelling in YHVH’s ‘high place’. The battle that took place between Amalek and Israel at the place called Rephidim. Rephidim means “place of rest”. The first two letters of this word is “
Repha”, and means to relax or to let go or to make slack. This was where Moses, Aaron and Hur went up the hill, a high place, and when Moses lifted his staff, the Israelites win, and when his arm got weak, the Amalekites won. Aaron and Hur had to support his hand so that the Israelites would win. It said in the Scripture that the Amalekites were not wiped out, but only weakened. It also states that they will be an enemy to every generation from there on.
What does it mean to us?
The Amalekites represents us, our physical side, and the Israelites also represent us, but our spiritual side. Moses’ name backwards is “hey” – “Shem” which can be interpreted; “shining the light of YHVH”. Aaron means, “Light bringer” and Hur means, “white cloth”. Hur read from the left is the word “
Ruach”, meaning Spirit.
Shining His light from a high place, clothed with a white garment, with the help of the Light bearer (Y’shua - Word) and His Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh).
To win over the enemy of your flesh, you have to put on your white garment (salvation – washed in His blood), shining His light (Word) with the help of His Spirit (Ruach). If you slack down and relax to take a break and rest, your flesh will win in your life, but if you stay in His Word, shining His light (good works – instructions in Torah), with the help of His Spirit, the spiritual side will win in your life.
This is a constant battle in the wilderness and every generation is faced with it daily. You must not relax your position in YHVH and stay in His Word, studying, walking in His Torah the set apart life, with the guidance and help of His Spirit. This enemy will be the enemy in your life until you pass through the gates of the New Jerusalem, the Promised Land.
Conclusion
This is a very serious warning to us to keep on standing unto the end, facing each day, being tortured with thorns in the flesh, but YHVH’s grace and His Torah and Spirit is enough for us. No temptation is too big for us; YHVH has sent the outcome with every temptation. The outcome is in His Word (Torah) and will be revealed to you by His Spirit.
Beware of the two enemies. The first enemy is Satan himself with his lies and his “attractive” city of bondage. Defeat him with the truth of YHVH’s Word. The second enemy is your flesh; defeat it by standing on the high place, not slacking in abiding in the Truth, living it out with the help of His Spirit and His Word.
