HOME BACKQ4. I have a question about the Hebrew word for water, specifically the English translation of "Genesis 1-2 "and the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (KJV) How can water exist at this point in creation? and could this be a mistranslation and the actual word is Chaos ??? Sincerely Kevin Prouix A4. a Very interesting question indeed and a difficult one to answer too. To kick off, I will start with the first verse in Scripture:

Verse one has all the ‘hidden’ truth that will show us the mystery concerning the water. I will show the first verse in Hebrew to illustrate this:

the earth – and – the heavens – (not translated) – Elohim – created – In the beginning
You must read this from right to left to understand it.
This verse consists of seven words: 1) Beresheet, 2) bara, 3) Elohim, 4) eth, 5) ha-shamayim, 6) veth 7) ha-arets
On the right of “eth” we have everything that started this process (spiritual); Elohim (Messenger, King Judge), Created and Beginning.
On the left of “eth” we have the result (physical); the heavens and earth.
We will see in the two things on the left side is the essence of how YHVH created it.
– Heavens

– Earth
Water in Hebrew is the word “
mayim”

and does not mean ‘chaos’. This is found inside the word “
hashamayim” meaning ‘heavens’. Chaos is found later in verse two and is the word “
tohu” – translated as ‘ without form’. On the second day YHVH created the firmament by separating the waters below to be below and above it and He did not say that it was good as He did on the other days of creation. This implies that it was not good. We can see that YHVH called things good when He separated two things that are different, but the waters that was the same, was not good to separate and only temporal. We will see this later as I explain more.
The first point that I would like to make is that all things that live needs water and consists of water and must have been created before they were created. Man was created out of the ground or earth and we can make the assumption that all other living things were also formed out of the earth or ground. The water (
mayim) is found in verse one where Elohim created the Heavens. The earth (
erets) is found where Elohim created the Earth. These two ‘substances’ were there before He formed the rest of the things, speaking it into existence saying; let the earth
bring forth (
yatsa) every living animal...” Man was
created (
bara), just like the heavens (water) and earth (ground).
How did Elohim separate the waters from the waters. The key is seen in the word “
Shamayim”

. It consists of a “
Shin”

meaning ‘Fire’ and “
mayim”

, meaning ‘water’. If you bring fire close to water it evaporates and move to the atmosphere. The Holy Spirit is also known as the Fire of YHVH and with His Spirit moving upon the face of the earth, make it a possibility for the separation of the water on the second day. Waters (sea) also means ‘nations’ and this is a picture of the separation of the nations, where the believers will be separated from the unbelievers. This is also why it was not good to separate on the second day. So, to answer your question; did water exist before the Creation? Yes, in Gen 1:1, before Elohim spoke the seven-day Creation, He created the substance for all things to be formed out of.
Just for interest sake:
Water – “
mayim”

– “
mem-yod-mem”. This is a Hebrew word picture because “
mem” means ‘water’, “
yod” means ‘Spirit’ and “
mem” means ‘water’ again. Note the two “
mems” look different, it has an open “
mem” on the right and a closed “
mem” on the left. The open “
mem” means ‘revealed Word’ and the closed “
mem” means ‘hidden Word’. It is the work of the Spirit to reveal YHVH’s Word to us so that it can be ‘open’ and understood by us. The closed “
mem” or Word is the knowledge of YHVH’s Character that we will learn through our relationship with Him. Water is needed by man to live and in the same way, His Word is a spiritual life necessity. Water flows downwards and this teaches us that only those who are humble will receive His Word.
The water being covered by water shows the picture of life contained in water before the birth process. Life was then birthed through the water (Word) and came into physical being. Later on YHVH re-birthed the Earth with Noah’s Flood where He washed all He mad clean. This is a picture of man to be re-birthed in order to be saved.
YHVH will restore the water He has separated and He will also do it by His Spirit. Just as His Spirit “Shin”

or Fire separated the water, so shall His Spirit rain on all the nations? The Hebrew word for drop also means ‘anointing’. His anointing will fall on all people of the earth, bringing back the water that existed above the firmament since creation. This will bring the Spiritual realm back to the earth and will manifest in the New Jerusalem coming down on the earth and YHVH will come and dwell among His people.

I hope this answer your question
