Q. Does “Grace” mean love or Law?

A. There is a famous verse that says that we are not under the law but under Grace.

Rom 6:14-16

(14) For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. (15) What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Let it not be! (16) Do you not know that to whom you yield yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to him whom you obey; whether it is of sin to death (law of sin), or of obedience to righteousness (Law of YHVH - Torah).

Which law was Paul talking about? Most people think that there is only one law referred to by Paul, but there are actually three; the Oral law of the Pharisees, the Law of YHVH or the Torah and the law of sin. You have to read the context in order to find our which law he is speaking against. He said here that we are not under the law but under grace. The context is that sin should not have dominion over you and we see later in Romans 7 which law he is talking about.

Rom 7:22-23

(22) For I delight in the Law of God (Torah) according to the inward man;(23) but I see another law in my members (law of sin), warring against the law of my mind (Torah), and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin being in my members. It is clear that the law which we obey in the flesh is the law of sin, and we are not under submission to the law of sin because YHVH gave us His Spirit so that we can stand and make our members subject to His Law in our mind (Torah in our hearts by his Sprit).

Rom 8:2
But the Law of the Spirit of life in Messiah Yeshua has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom 6:18-20

(18) Then being made free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness. (19) I speak in the manner of men because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you have yielded your members as slaves to uncleanness, and to lawless act unto lawless act, even so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness unto holiness. (20) For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.

These two laws are warring against each other and we must be servants or righteousness and submit under the Law of YHVH in our minds, and not servants of our flesh and submit under the law of sin. Through His Spirit we are set free from being bound to obedience to the law of sin and we may follow the law in our hearts (Torah), as was prophesied in Eze.

Eze_11:19-21
“And I shall give them one heart, and put a new spirit within you. And I shall take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, (20) so that they walk in My laws (Torah), and guard My right-rulings, and shall do them. And they shall be My people and I shall be their Elohim. (21) “But to those whose hearts walk after the heart of their.

This shows us that Grace is not taking away the Law of YHVH (Torah), but took away the law of sin that bound us previously. So what is Grace then? The Grace of YHVH is the fact that He gave us His Spirit that set us free from the bondage of sin. Grace is also defined as a free gift and there is nothing you have to do to get it other than faith in Yeshua. The Grace of YHVH (gift of His Sprit that gave us Life) is also then the fact that we are saved through faith and not though the Law (Torah). This is also causing a lot of confusion because people tend to take this concept and use it to say that this grace id against the Torah of YHVH.

Gal 5:4-5
(4) you who are justified by Law (Torah) are deprived of all effect from Messiah; you fell from grace. (5) For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness out of faith.

Eph 2:8
For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, You receive this gift of salvation through His Spirit because it says in … that the people who will be saved must be sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Eph 1:13-14

(13) in whom also you, hearing the Word of Truth, the gospel of our salvation, in whom also believing, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, (14) who is the earnest of our inheritance, to the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

In other words; you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit that was promised in Eze (as we have seen), giving you the hope of salvation because He redeemed you (paid for you and now posses you) and the sign to you is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also gave you the Torah in your heart so that you may do it with a willing obeying heart and not mechanically like the people without His Spirit. Then you will be sure if you stand before Him having the testimony of Yeshua and the Torah (guarding His Commandments) as stated in revelation.

Rev_14:11-12
(11) “And the smoke of their torture goes up forever and ever. And they have no rest day or night, those worshipping the beast and his image, also if anyone receives the mark of his name.” (12) Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones (holy ones),1 here are those guarding the commands of Elohim and the belief of Y’shua. 2 Footnotes: 1In Rev_12:17 they are called “the remnant”

Rev_22:13-16

“I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Tav’, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. (14) “Blessed are those1 doing His commands,2 so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of Life, and to enter through the gates into the city (New Jerusalem). Footnotes: 1See Mat_19:17.

So, what is Grace then? Grace is the free gift of YHVH to man that came through His Son Yeshua through Whom He gave us His Spirit so that we can have His seal that will be a sign at the end of time unto salvation and the Commandments in our hearts so that we could stand before Him with white clean robes. His Spirit (Gift of Grace) did not take away the Torah but engraved it in our hearts so that we may have the water of His Word (Torah) to wash our selves clean as we walk as believers shining His light in this dark world.

Eph 5:26-27

(26) that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word, (27) that He might present it to Himself as the glorious church, without spot or wrinkle or any such things, but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Rev 19:8
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white. For the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.

The steps for a Believer is as follows; you come into faith to YHVH through faith in His Son Yeshua the Messiah. This is not a work of any kind, it is through the word of the Gospel that your eyes have been opened to the truth regarding YHVH’s salvation plan for man. The second step is where you need to receive His free Gift of the Holy Spirit. This normally takes place after you go through baptism. Just like Yeshua were baptised He received the Spirit, in the same way we receive the Spirit because Paul said that Baptism is the symbol for us being born again, brought into the New Life through the Spirit.

Rom 6:3-5
(3) Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? (4) Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father; even so we also should walk in newness of Life. (5) For if we have been joined together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection;

In other words; if we are baptised, we relate to His death and sow that the old man died with Him, and if we come out of the water, we show that we are resurrected the same way Yeshua were resurrected into the New Life. What is the likeness of His resurrection, or how was He resurrected?

Rom 8:11
But if the Spirit of the One who raised up Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised up Messiah from the dead shall also make your mortal bodies alive by His Spirit who dwells in you.

You will not have Life (everlasting) if you have not received His Spirit and this is a free Gift of YHVH, which He gives to the people who have faith in Yeshua. Now you have received His Spirit and have the New Life inside of you AND you have His Torah written in your heart so that He can help you live a righteous life unto Him and help you to wash away your previous pagan influences. Just as He took Israel out of Egypt (bondage) and took them to His Holy Mountain (Sinai) to give them instructions (Ten Commandments), he takes you from your sinful life of bondage and gives you His Spirit to help you as you go through the cleansing process in the wilderness, on your way to the Promised Land (New Jerusalem). Does Grace mean love or law? Both, the Law of YHVH we receive in our hearts so that we can follow it with the right motive, namely love.

Joh_14:15-17
If you love Me, you shall guard My commands.1 Footnote: 1See Exo_20:6, 1Jn_5:2-3, 2Jn_1:6. (16) “And I shall ask the Father, and He shall give you another Helper, to stay with you forever – (17) the Spirit of the Truth, whom the world is unable to receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. But you know Him, for He stays with you and shall be in you.

1Jn_5:2-4
By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim and guard His commands. (3) For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands,1 and His commands are not heavy, (4) because everyone having been born of Elohim overcomes the world. And this is the overcoming that has overcome the world: our belief.

Why are the Commandments not heavy? Because we have been born of Elohim (God) through receiving His Life by receiving His Spirit (free Gift) and through the Spirit you will have the ability and right motive to conform to His Law (character). The Law (Torah) describes YHVH’s Character and through His Law we will know Him. Tese are a few things King David said regarding YHVH’s Commandments and this is an example to us on how to feel about His Commandments because Davis also has the Holy Spirit, just like us.

Psa 119:103-105

(103) How sweet are Your Words to my taste! More than honey to my mouth! (104) Through Your Commandments I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. (105) Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.

Psa 119:10-11
(10) With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your Commandments. (11) I have hidden Your Word in my heart, so that I might not sin against You. Psa 119:18 Open my eyes, so that I may behold wonderful things out of Your Torah. Paul had similar things to say regarding YHVH’s Commandments:

1Ti_1:8
And we know that the Torah is good if one uses it legitimately, Rom_3:31 Do we then nullify the Torah through faith? Let it not be! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.1 Footnote: 1See Rom_7:12.

Paul makes it clear that we establish the Torah in our lives when we have come to faith in Yeshua and have received His Spirit. This leads us to the conclusion that the Grace of YHVH is the means YHVH gave us to equip us to establish His Torah in our lives. This Grace is known as His Spirit which leads to Salvation if you submit under Him and walk in the Spirit of Yeshua.
